Becoming Producers Launches with Workshop by Costume Designer of Amelia

Becoming Producers (formerly known as The Production of Youth by Youth), led by Dan Friedman, artistic director of Youth Onstage! has launched. On Tuesday, February 16, Becoming Producers held it's first workshop with 15 young people attending the class, mostly new to All Stars youth programs.

The workshop's first guest was Kasia Walicka Maimone, theatre and movie costume designer (among her credits are: the movies Amelia, Capote, and Song Catcher).  The workshop was a big hit.

Kasia showed slides of her costume designs and talked about how she became a costume designer (emigrating from Poland at the age of 20 and designing about 200 shows in small theatres while she worked as a waitress.  She talked about her big break as an assistant to the costume designer at the Public Theater and what it's like to design a big Hollywood movie.  In the movie Amelia there were 4,000 costumes, for which she had a staff of 27 people.  They worked 14 hour days and interfaced with the directors and production designers. She shared with the youth how the business works (including the importance of networking, the role and structure of the unions, the function of agents and the contracts with the producers.

Kasia was very passionate in sharing her work and expertise with the young people, who said after the workshop, that she was an inspiration and they wanted to keep in touch with her.

The next workshop will be a visit to Jazz at Lincoln Center to meet with executive producer Laura Johnson.  Stay tuned for more Becoming Producer developments!  To get more information contact Dan Friedman at 212-356-8450 or dfriedman@allstars.org.
