Afterschool Advocacy Community Meeting in Harlem, March 11 led by Dr. Lenora Fulani and Pamela A. Lewis

On Thursday, March 11, Dr. Lenora B. Fulani, Ph.D, founder, All Stars Project and Pamela A. Lewis, Director of Youth Programs, All Stars Project led their second afterschool advocacy community meeting. This meeting, entitled, "Our Kids - and Our Communities - Must Have a Chance to Grow", was held at the First AME Bethel Church in Harlem, and more than 100 parents, grandparents, young people, and community leaders attended.

This was the second meeting (the first was held Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Van Dyke Community Center in Brownsville, Brooklyn in which over 100 parents, grandparents, young people, and community leaders attended) of an important All Stars initiative to build advocacy groups in inner-city neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs. At the Harlem meeting, participants learned about the importance of developmental afterschool and their role in advocating for new innovations that can improve the quality of life of their families and neighborhoods.

Rev. Henry A. Belin II, pastor of the First AME Bethel Church welcomed the group. Twenty-eight people joined the newly formed Committee for Independent Community Action and will advocate in an ongoing way for quality afterschool programs to become a major priority for the city.
