Independent Culture Grows in Philadelphia

  • Philadelphia's "Theater For Everyone" project, produced by the Philadelphia Committee for Independent Culture (PCIC), is in the middle of its 8th season. PCIC’s Eighth Year Anniversary Celebration, held in March, was a huge success and lots of fun! It featured a retrospective/showcase of short scenes from the plays of Fred Newman (the artistic director of New York’s Castillo Theatre). The scenes were from the plays that PCIC has produced over the years.
  • At 5:00 p.m. on June 6th, PCIC held a screening of the indie feature, Nothing Really Happens: Stories of Aging Strippers at North Third restaurant film screening room. Nothing Really Happens, written and directed by Fred Newman, was just awarded the Grand Festival Special Recognition Award (Feature Category) at the 2004 Berkeley Video and Film Festival, just three months after Nothing Really Happens won First Prize (Feature Category) at the Director’s View Film Festival in Connecticut. The film features acclaimed 78 year-old actress Judith Malina who was recently inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame and an ensemble cast drawn largely from New York’s Castillo Theatre. Nothing Really Happens is based on two Newman plays — the critically praised The Store: One Block East of Jerome, and Mr. Hirsch Died Yesterday, both of which were first produced at Castillo. The Philadelphia screening also featured a Q & A with the film’s producer, Mary Fridley.
  • Lastly, PCIC just kicked off its street performance season! Our team of volunteers regularly goes out on the streets of Philadelphia to introduce Philadelphians to – and raise money for – PCIC’s unique theater project and performance activities!
