The Atlanta All Stars produced a one-day performance event
and open mic on July 31 at the Grady Homes, a housing project
in downtown Atlanta. Eighty adult and youth residents from
Grady Homes attended along with 16 All Stars volunteers.
Nichelle “Browneyes” Joseph and Murray Dabby emcee’d the
event with Dabby first leading the audience in a collective
improv workshop. The audience was broken up into four mixed
groups (of youth and adults). Each group performed an improvised
skit in front of the enthusiastic and approving crowd. Then
Browneyes, a brilliant rapper in her own right and former
grand prize winner at the All Stars’ national finals in New
York, led the open-mic segment of the afternoon. Over 20 acts
– from all over Atlanta – performed, including dancers, rappers,
singers, poets and comedians. Several local residents commented
that this was the first time they had seen youth and adults
creating something together like this.

On July 24, the All Stars held a concert-fundraiser
at Atlanta’s Echo Lounge, the brainchild of volunteer Christy
Siegling. Taking part in the concert were four known Atlanta
bands. There was a punk group, a southern rock band, one that
did hip-hop and a fourth that performed rockabilly. They all
volunteered their services for the fundraiser and played to
a crowd of nearly 300. There were raffles, give-aways and
a volunteer sign-up. The event was sponsored by Atlrawk (an
organization that helps raise money for community efforts). The
fundraiser brought in close to $1500 for Atlanta All Stars!!
