Broadway (Sometimes Off) is a theatrical love letter (with music) to contemporary Broadway, created and presented by the Castillo Theatre ensemble under the direction of Madelyn Chapman. The production, which ran five performances only, opened Friday September 15 and closed Saturday, Sept. 30.
Over the course of the last year, members of Castillo's performing ensemble attended more than 50 Broadway (and Off Broadway) productions including Sweeny Todd, The Little Dog Laughed, Glengarry Glen Ross, Hairspray and others. The actors explored the productions in an extended series of improvisational workshops through which they developed the sketches that comprise Broadway (Sometimes Off).
The heart of the production is a performance by veteran Broadway theatergoer, self-confessed "show queen" and twenty-year Castillo ensemble member, Kenneth Hughes. "My love affair with Broadway started when, as a boy, I saw the film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific. I was completely enchanted! Here was a story beautifully told through the rapturous music of Richard Rogers and the brilliant, evocative lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein... I was in heaven and there was no turning back!"

October 20 is opening night for Outing Wittgenstein. The play is in two acts: the first, a farcical take-off on the 1950s TV show, This is Your Life, (in the play, it's called This is Your Death) where the deceased Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein is brought back to life and meets his gay alter ego. The second act is set in Central Park, where strange and surprising things begin to happen to a group of four friends who are discussing the show. The cast features a mix of professional actors with cameos by young performers from Youth Onstage!
For tickets, dates and information on Outing Wittgenstein or any of Castillo's other offerings this season, contact the Castillo box office at 212-941-1234 or visit the Castillo website or www.theatermania.com.
