A Letter from the Architect on the All Stars Performing Arts and Learning Center

A rendering of the new facade of the All Stars headquarters on 42nd Street, once renovations have been completed.

Dear All Stars supporters:

As many of you know, the All Stars vacated its headquarters in August to undergo renovation of the heating and cooling systems (HVAC), the lobby and building exterior front wall. I am glad to share my update on the renovation project with you.

The existing HVAC system was the catalyst for the entire project as it was severely inadequate to meet the occupants' requirements. Nothing short of the entire system's replacement would address its deficiencies.

Tied to the HVAC is the need for ventilation or fresh air. The difficulty of providing fresh air through the existing exterior wall, when the wall is in disrepair and does not insulate the interior, necessitated building a new wall.

This set up the overall technical requirements for project.

We then developed the design concept. First, we decided to use the new 42nd Street exterior wall to make a statement that expresses our performance model and community by building the All Stars logo – a star – and performance space as the new entrance. Everyone will pass through the All Stars' "star”"and enter the lobby performance space. The space will be completely visible from the street.

Right now, demolition of the existing space has been completed. The new HVAC equipment is on order and ductwork and piping are being installed. The structural steel, electrical work, carpentry, and storefront trades are underway.

I look forward to keeping you updated on the renovation.
