The Boston All Stars has taken to the streets for their fourth show. “We want to increase our ability to develop our young people as producers and create more opportunities for them to perform,” says Evelyn Dougherty, director of the Boston All Stars. This year, Boston will produce two All Stars auditions and a talent show. The first two auditions took place in Dudley on April 26 and in Grove Hall on May 3. The talent show will be held on May 17.
Other exciting developments include the arrival of Demakis, a 17 year-old rapper and spoken word artist as the new Boston All Stars emcee. Boston All Stars alumni are also emerging as youth organizers. Amber, a 13 year-old singer who’s performed in two shows and the Boston All Stars benefit, organized new acts from her school to perform. Thatiana, age 10, decided that this year she would volunteer and has signed up her family members to perform!
Thanks to the community outreach effort led by Sarah Bayer, the first audition took place at the Vine Street Community Center. “We're meeting with the organizations around Dudley and Grove Hall,” said Sarah. The All Stars is being invited to speak to youth of all ages to recruit them as performers and producers for the Talent Show Network. Boston All Stars volunteer coordinator, Diane Whitehouse, has also started to make use of social networking media like Facebook to keep volunteers informed and organized.
Our supporters are also contributing in many new ways to this growth effort. Dr. Roscoe Giles, one of the earliest Boston supporters, became an All Stars Circle Member, joining many others who have increased their financial contributions early in the year, in an effort to help the Boston All Stars reach more young people. In addition to financial support, contributors have been volunteering at auditions and shows. “This is great. I’m really glad that the people who have been our partners in making this happen are getting to experience the joy of being with our young people performing and producing,” said development associate, Joan DeCollibus.
