Development School for Youth Expands

Interns from the All Stars Project of New York and New Jersey, Development School for Youth (DSY) present certificates to their internship supervisors at the Summer Internship Reception.

Over the past school year, the All Stars Project of New York, Development School for Youth (ASP of NY, DSY) and the All Stars Project of New Jersey, Development School for Youth (ASP of NJ, DSY) graduated a total of 209 young people.   Much of the growth in numbers comes from the expansion of the ASP of NJ DSY, which added a third class this past spring.   The increased number of graduates led to a record breaking Internship Campaign, which placed 188 graduates in paid summer internships at close to sixty different companies in New York and New Jersey. Dun & Bradstreet led the way sponsoring twenty-six internships and ten other companies sponsored five or more this summer.

To ensure each of the ASP of NY and NJ, DSY graduates an internship experience upon graduation, outreach to the business community greatly expanded.   Support for the growth and development of our students was broader than ever before and twenty-five of this year’s sponsoring companies were involved for the first time.

While the internships officially end the last week of August, the ASP of NJ and the ASP of NY, DSY teams celebrated this year’s Internship Program with receptions on August 12th and 13th respectively, to thank the companies and supervisors for their participation.   As always, it was a moving event, giving testimony to the partnership being created between our business supporters and our young people.

We are quickly approaching the fall and preparing for new groups of young people to begin DSY. On Tuesday, September 23rd the ASP of NJ, DSY will hold their Orientation ceremony at a location to be confirmed and on Wednesday, September 24th the ASP of NY, DSY will hold their ceremony at Merrill Lynch. This event is the official and public kick-off for the Fall 2008 semester and brings together students, business leaders, volunteers, and the young people’s family and friends.
