PYBY Makes New Friends

Robert Baruc, President of Screen Media Films, speaks to students at a PYBY workshop.

The All Stars Project of New York’s developing producers program, Production of Youth by Youth (The ASP of NY, PYBY) had a busy fall semester visiting cultural institutions and meeting with producers around the city.  Two new cultural institutions opened their doors for the first time to the developing producers of PYBY.  The Broadway League (formerly the League of American Theatres and Producers), the trade association for Broadway producers, welcomed the PYBY students to their offices in Times Square, where the students held an in-depth discussion with a company manager and a Broadway producer.  Also joining the PYBY network this semester was Steiner Studios, the largest and most sophisticated film and television studio outside of Hollywood.  Steiner, which is located in the former Brooklyn Navy Yard, is where TV shows such as 30 Rock and Damages are filmed and where films such as American Gangster and Spiderman 3 were produced.  Damone Richardson, the studio’s director of human resources, gave the PYBY students a tour of the vast facilities.

In addition to their travels and backstage discussions, PYBY students took part in a number of workshops about skills producers need, including the “Performance of a Conversation” and “Public Speaking”. The PYBY students also worked backstage, at the box office, and as ushers at the All Stars Talent Show on November 22 at Thomas Jefferson High School in East New York, Brooklyn.
