The “New Timers” Offer Development at Every Age
David Cherry

The ASP of NY’s New Timers program allows older New Yorkers to develop through the fun and creativity of ensemble performance.

We are The New Timers! Turns out that “senior citizen” or even “senior,” except when it comes to those half-priced bus and movie tickets, are not labels that older people favor.  For us, New Timers captures the enthusiasm, vitality, and creativity of this three year-old program for older New Yorkers.

Fifteen to twenty older people come together each week to play and explore issues of growth and development for older Americans through improv games, exercises, and scene-work.  For example, a recent 10-week workshop cycle was spent looking at the issue of creating one’s day versus keeping busy. In the past year, members of New Timers have visited senior citizen centers throughout the city – Encore, JASA and Penn South –where they have introduced other older New Yorkers to the joys of improv.  Plans are to continue this part of the program with regular outreach to senior groups.

New Timers will be starting its summer workshop in early June. The program is free and open to everyone who wants to join. Those with interest can sign up now by calling 212-941-9400 ext.439.
