UX Fall Semester is Underway!

Saturday, September 24th was Opening Day for the Fall Semester of UX, which drew a crowd of close to 300, bringing the UX student body to a total of 1,500. Adults and young people from all walks of life were welcomed by Dean Lenora Fulani, Ph.D. who presented the wide range of offerings at UX this fall.

Opening Day also featured an improv workshop, a hip-hop dance class and participatory readings of scenes from the plays of Fred Newman. One key feature of UX and of Opening Day was an opportunity for everyone to meet one-on-one with a Development Coach. Ten development coaches saw a total of 76 people and each coach will be leading a developmental group outing this semester.

In addition to UX favorite classes and workshops such as  "Improv for Everyone," "Public Speaking" and "Acting for Everyone," this semester also features, among other new courses: "Dance for the Whole City," taught by internationally renowned modern dancer and aerialist Javier Dzul; "The Art of Drawing" hosted by a professional cartoonist and illustrator Graham Halky, and an "Introduction to Caribbean Theatre" led by Rudolph Shaw, the artistic director of the Caribbean American Theatre.

At Opening Day, people also signed up to join the new UX Community Organizing Certificate Program led by Dean Dr. Lenora Fulani and Pam Lewis, vice-president of youth organizing at the All Stars Project. In addition, students registered to "Spend A Day At College," a series exchange visits between UX and Queensborough Community College students.

A SUMMER OF PRETENDING

The UX "Summer of Pretending" was a big success.  Eight courses and workshops were held, along with three offerings from Dean Dr. Lenora Fulani.  A total of 322 students attended UX events this summer. The summer kicked off on July 6 with "Transforming Education in Brazil" a report from Dr. Fernanda LIberali about the innovative work her and her colleagues are doing in Brazil's schools, and ended on August 20 with the final class of the series "Improv for Everyone".  In between, UX classes and workshops included: "Why Baseball Matters," "Will Power," a workshop on performing Shakespeare (photo at left), "Creating and Exploring Art for the Non-Artist," "Public Speaking," and "Dialogues with Dean Dr. Fulani."
